Detailed Introduction and Applications of Glass Packaging Containers

Glass packaging containers are transparent containers made mainly from silicate materials, melted at high temperatures and then formed through blowing or molding. They are widely used in the beverage, food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries. Glass bottles for photoresist are one of the major technological research focuses and have been trialed on production lines with good feedback. Their materials include soda-lime glass, lead glass, and colored glass, with soda-lime glass being the most common due to its cost and performance advantages. These containers are classified by neck size into small-neck, large-neck, and wide-mouth bottles, and their geometric shapes cover diverse designs including round, square, and curved forms. Color options include colorless, white, brown, and green, among others. The production process involves raw material weighing, kiln melting, and molding and annealing. In recent years, efficiency and environmental performance have been improved through lightweight designs, recycled glass technology, and multi-component molding machinery, with recycled glass recovery rates reaching up to 100%.

Classification basis
There are many types of Glass Containers, which can be classified as follows: 
By bottle mouth size:
① Small mouth. These are glass bottles with an inner diameter of less than 20mm, mostly used for packaging liquid materials, such as soda, beer, etc.
② Large mouth. Glass bottles with an inner diameter between 20–30mm, relatively short and thick in shape, such as milk bottles.
③ Wide mouth. Also known as canning jars, these have a bottle mouth inner diameter greater than 30mm, with short neck and shoulder, and a relatively flat shoulder. Often in can or cup shapes. Due to the large mouth, filling and pouring are easier, commonly used for packaging canned foods and viscous materials.
By geometric shape:
① Round bottles. The cross-section of the bottle body is round, the most widely used bottle shape, with high strength.
② Square bottles. The cross-section of the bottle body is square; these bottles have lower strength than round bottles and are harder to manufacture, so they are less commonly used.
③ Curved bottles. The cross-section is round, but in the vertical direction, it is curved, with concave and convex types, such as vase-shaped, gourd-shaped, etc., with innovative forms, very popular among users.
④ Oval bottles. The cross-section is oval; although capacity is small, the shape is unique and favored by users.
By purpose:
① Bottles for alcoholic beverages. Alcohol production is large, almost all packaged in glass bottles, mostly round bottles.
② Daily-use packaging glass bottles. Usually used for packaging various daily small commodities, such as cosmetics, ink, glue, etc. Since there are many types of products, the bottle shapes and closures are also diverse.
③ Canning jars. Canned food comes in many types, with large production, forming a category of its own. Mostly wide-mouth bottles, with a capacity generally of 0.2–0.5L.
④ Pharmaceutical bottles. These are glass bottles used to package medicines, including brown round-mouth small-mouth bottles with capacities of 10–200mL, infusion bottles of 100–1000mL, completely sealed bottles.
⑤ Bottles for chemical reagents. Used for packaging various chemical reagents, generally with a capacity of 250–1200mL, the bottle mouths are mostly screw or ground types.
By color:
Colorless transparent bottles, white bottles, brown bottles, green bottles, and blue bottles, etc.
By neck shape:
Necked bottles, neckless bottles, long-neck bottles, short-neck bottles, thick-neck bottles, and thin-neck bottles, etc.

Development trend
In order to compete with new packaging materials and containers such as paper containers and plastic bottles, glass packaging industries in developed countries have been committed to making products more reliable in quality, more aesthetically pleasing, lower in cost, and cheaper in price. To achieve these goals, the development trends of foreign glass packaging industries are mainly reflected in the following aspects: 

①Advanced Energy-Saving Technology
Saving energy, improving melting quality, and extending kiln lifespan. Another way to save energy is to increase the use of cullet, with foreign countries adding 60%-70% cullet. Ideally, using 100% cullet would achieve the goal of “eco-friendly” glass production.

②Lightweight Bottles and Jars
In developed countries such as Europe, the US, and Japan, lightweight bottles have become the dominant products of glass containers. For the glass bottles and jars produced by Germany's Obedand Company, 80% are lightweight disposable bottles. Accurate control of raw material composition, precise control throughout the melting process, narrow neck press-and-blow technology (NNPB), hot and cold end coating, and online inspection are advanced technologies that fundamentally ensure the lightweight design of bottles and jars. Some countries are developing new surface reinforcement technologies for bottles and jars, attempting to further reduce their weight. For example, Germany's Haile Company applies a thin layer of organic resin to the surface of bottle walls and produces 1-liter concentrated juice bottles weighing only 295 grams, which can prevent glass bottles from being scratched and increase the pressure strength of the bottles by 20%. The currently popular plastic film labeling also helps to make glass bottles and jars lighter.

③Improving Productivity
The key to increasing labor productivity in glass bottle manufacturing is how to improve the molding speed of glass bottles. Currently, the common approach in developed countries is to use molding machines with multiple sets and multiple drops of material.

Primary users
The main market for glass containers can roughly be divided into three parts: containers for beverages, containers for food, and small containers for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. In recent years, although the demand for glass packaging containers in the international market has shown a declining trend, glass packaging containers still remain the main packaging materials for beverages, medicines, and other products. In order to cope with the intense competition in the international packaging market, some foreign glass packaging container manufacturers and research institutions have continuously introduced new equipment and adopted new technologies, leading to significant progress in the manufacture of glass packaging containers.
